“So, what's new with Brotherhood in 5769?”
L'Shannah tovah!
The New Year is upon us and we are excited about another great year of
Brotherhood activities and service. During 5768 Brotherhood
introduced its first Folk/Coffee House with folk singer Bill Staines,
and its first tailgating party - featuring the really big screen TV.
Both events provided members an opportunity to socialize and enjoy a
greater sense of community and connection with friends and other
Temple Isaiah members (and look out for Tracy Grammer appearing at this
year's Coffee House event December 6th!)
In addition to the Brotherhood Breakfasts (Allen Sinai on October 19,
and Nadav Tamir on November 23) we will continue with the school
picnic in May, and the 99¢ Jewish family movies in the Spring.
If you would like to serve the Isaiah community, why not help build
the Sukkah or usher during the High Holidays?
Softball players are welcome to join one of our two teams, and we are
always looking for people interested in camping with us in June. The
Super Bowl Party and the First Friday Torah Study are among the other
activities that Brotherhood can offer its members and the community.
So what's new for 5769?
To help celebrate Temple Isaiah's 50th Anniversary, Brotherhood
will be producing a DVD that features many of the original and early
Isaiah members. The DVD will be premiered at a Brotherhood Breakfast,
and will be donated to the library for future Isaiah generations to
enjoy. If you have writing, editing, or video production skills, this
project would be a terrific way to give back to the community and
honor the people who helped start and build Temple Isaiah.
The Brotherhood is also going “green” in 5769. We are
looking for a few volunteers who would like to develop and run a cell
phone recycling campaign. Whether it is to recycle unwanted phones,
or help raise some money for Temple Isaiah, this would be a great way
for someone to participate in a worthy temple and community project.
As president of Brotherhood, I want to thank all of our members for
their contributions in 5768, and extend a welcome to you to join
Brotherhood in 5769.

Ushers Still Needed for Late Rosh Hashanah and Early Kol Nidre Services
Although we had very good repsonse from the new system for asking for
ushers during High Holiday ticketing, we still could use a few more
ushers for the LATE Rosh Hashanah service, as well as
the EARLY Kol Nidre service. If you're able to help out,
please contact Phil Shevrin at 781-863-5447 or via email
at hhusher@templeisaiah.net.
Thanks!

Thursday October 2, 7:00 PM - Brotherhood Social and Planning Meeting
The Brotherhood meets each month, to plan and manage its activities.
All are welcome to this month's meeting, which will be a pot-luck
dinner held at the home of a Brotherhood member. A great, low-key way
to meet new people and learn about the range of Brotherhood activities
and consider how you might want to get involved. For further
information, and to RSVP, contact Brotherhood's President, Art Rosenberg (phone:
781-861-9341), or Barry Tuber (phone: 617-489-6169), or
email: brotherhood@templeisaiah.net.

Friday October 3, 7:30 AM - First Friday Torah Study
Each month, Rabbi Brown leads a Torah Study group in a lively,
participatory discussion of a Torah Portion. All congregants, both male
and female, are welcome. Brotherhood provides
fresh bagels, cream cheese and freshly brewed coffee for each session.
It's a great way to start the month!
The discussions take place on the First Friday of each month at the
temple. Sessions begin at 7:30 AM and end before 8:30. Bring a
Tanach or share; no RSVP needed, just come.

Sunday October 12, 9:00 AM - Assembling the Temple Isaiah Sukkah
Brotherhood needs your help to erect the Temple Isaiah sukkah on
Sunday, October 12 (the Sunday after Yom Kippur) starting at 9:00
AM. There will be no religious school that day (because of Columbus
Day), so why not bring the kids along (not the very young ones,
please) and give them the chance to say that they helped build this
year's sukkah?
This is a great way to make new friends, help the temple, and have a
good time. Bring tools (screwdrivers, socket wrenches, etc.) and
gardening/work gloves. Refreshments will be provided. Construction
takes approximately two hours (or less time if you are there!).

Sunday October 19th, 9:30 AM - Breakfast With Allen Sinai
Please join us on Sunday, October 19th when Brotherhood's Breakfast series
move into high gear with an Allen Sinai talk
entitled:
The U.S. Economy and Financial Markets Before and After the Election.
The U.S. economy before this year's Presidential Election appears to
be in a recession and stock markets around-the-world are in a bear
configuration.
Financial institutions have been in a crisis mode with an
unprecedented real estate bust and bust in credit. What can be
expected in the financial markets?
What has happened to the U.S. economy? Is the U.S. malaise spreading
in the world? What will the Presidential Election and its aftermath
bring to help end the current troubles? Please join us on Sunday
October 19th at 9:30 AM for the second of our 2008-2009 Brotherhood
Breakfasts, as we welcome our own Allen Sinai as the guest speaker and
he addresses these and other questions.
Allen has served a wide a variety of organizations and decision-makers
in the U.S. and abroad, as an analyst, forecaster, educator, and
economic policy, strategy, and financial markets advisor. He is
currently Chief Global Economist/Strategist and President of Decision
Economics, Inc., which has locations in New York, Boston, and London.
Allen received his Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the University
of Michigan and a Doctorate in Economics from Northwestern University.
He has received numerous awards, served on faculties at MIT, New York
University, Boston University, Brandeis University, and the University
of Illinois. He and his wife Lee Sinai live in Lexington where they
have also raised two children, Todd and Lauren, and they have five
grand children.
The morning's event will include a delicious bagel and lox bagel
breakfast. The breakfast will start at 9:30 A.M. and Allen's
presentation will begin at 10:00 A.M. General admission is $10, or
free with Brotherhood membership (annual dues cost $45; spouses can
join for $35; dues are free for new Temple Isaiah members). For
further information, contact Murry Awrach at 781-861-0342 or Bob
Zacher at 781-646-6027, or email
brotherhood@templeisaiah.net.
